Rádio Lumen is the Catholic radio station of Slovakia, with its studios in Banská Bystrica rather than the capital — one of the few broadcasters with national reach not run out of Bratislava. The interesting thing about it is financial. Lumen is not a commercial station and does not live on advertising: it is funded largely by its own listeners, through an annual appeal and a steady flow of small donations, with Catholic institutions behind that. The core of the output is religious: mass broadcast live each day, the rosary at fixed hours, readings, catechesis and discussion of church affairs. Programming of this kind is built on repetition — a listener joining the same broadcast at the same hour every day is the point of it, not a failure of imagination.Jadro vysielania je náboženské: svätá omša prenášaná naživo každý deň, ruženec v pevných hodinách, čítania, katechézy a rozhovory o dianí v cirkvi. Outside broadcasts are the station's most visible work. Slovakia keeps a full calendar of pilgrimages — Mariánska hora above Levoča in July, the national shrine at Šaštín, Staré Hory above Banská Bystrica, Rajecká Lesná — and Lumen carries them live, with papal events and the major feasts. For the elderly and the housebound the relay is not a supplement to the pilgrimage; it is the pilgrimage.Najviditeľnejšou prácou stanice sú prenosy z terénu. It is not only a devotional service, and that is what makes it a radio station. Bulletins run through the day, there is current affairs and interview programming, and there is music — sacred, classical and popular, much of it rooted in Slovak folk song.Nie je to však len modlitebná služba — a práve preto je rádiom. Rádio Lumen went on air in the early 1990s, when religious broadcasting became possible again after four decades in which it had not been. Under the communist state the churches had no access to the airwaves, and Slovak Catholics who listened to religious radio listened to foreign shortwave. Its base in Banská Bystrica matters more than a postal address usually does. The city is a diocesan seat in the middle of the country, closer than Bratislava to the mountain parishes and pilgrimage places of central and northern Slovakia.Sídlo v Banskej Bystrici znamená viac než obyčajná poštová adresa. FM covers most of the country, with DAB and the station's own website and app alongside it.
