Rádio Košice is a commercial station broadcasting from the country's second city for Košice and the region around it. It is regional by design: the music is mainstream, but the news, the traffic, the weather and the diary are local. A national network reads the same bulletin in Bratislava and in Sobrance; a regional station reads the one in which Sobrance appears.Rádio Košice je komerčná stanica, ktorá vysiela z druhého mesta krajiny pre Košice a ich okolie. Regionálne je zámerne: hudba je mainstreamová, ale správy, doprava, počasie a kalendár podujatí sú miestne. Celoštátna sieť číta tie isté správy v Bratislave aj v Sobranciach; regionálna stanica číta tie, v ktorých sa Sobrance objavia.
It is a commercial broadcaster. Regional stations in Slovakia have repeatedly been bought by national groups, or attached to them, while keeping their local name and newsroom, so no owner is named here. What matters is where the newsroom sits, and this one sits in Košice.Ide o komerčného vysielateľa. The music end is mainstream, because a regional station cannot afford a narrow audience. A regional newsroom's diary is made of things a national one covers only in summary: the steelworks that has set the rhythm of employment for sixty years, the universities and the teaching hospital, the ice hockey club, and the Peace Marathon each October, run since the 1920s and the oldest marathon in Europe. The audience is not only the city: Košice is the market town for a very large hinterland — Michalovce, Trebišov, Rožňava, Spišská Nová Ves, and smaller places from Medzev to Kráľovský Chlmec — and along the southern strip a substantial part of the population speaks Hungarian at home. Broadcasting from Košice is far older than any commercial licence. The city had a radio studio in the interwar Czechoslovak years, an eastern studio of the state broadcaster has been a fixture ever since, and the public regional service still comes out of Košice today.Vysielanie z Košíc je oveľa staršie než ktorákoľvek komerčná licencia. The commercial regional tier is newer and matters more in the east than the national picture suggests. Most Slovak media are made in Bratislava, four hundred kilometres away, and the further east a place lies the less of the country's coverage is about it.
