Rádio_FM is one of the radio channels of STVR, the Slovak public broadcaster, and the one with the narrowest brief: new and alternative music for a younger audience. It plays much of what the commercial stations will not — guitar music from outside the charts, electronic music, hip hop, and genres no commercial playlist would carry.Rádio_FM je jednou z rozhlasových staníc verejnoprávnej STVR a má zo všetkých najužšie zadanie: nová a alternatívna hudba pre mladšieho poslucháča. That makes it more than a station in the domestic music economy. A country of five million does not support a commercial market for its own independent records, so the public channel that gives them airtime, studio time and a stage at the summer festivals ends up being part of the infrastructure the scene stands on.V domácej hudobnej ekonomike je preto viac než len stanicou. The daytime output is music-led and presenter-led, with news kept short. Live music is the other half of it. Sessions recorded in the broadcaster's studios, concert relays and festival broadcasts give Slovak bands two rare things: a properly engineered recording, and an audience that did not come to see them. The station has also stood behind an annual Slovak music award for albums across genres.Druhou polovicou je živá hudba. Speech has its place too — documentary features and cultural reporting pitched at people in their twenties rather than at the audience the main channels are built for. The station grew out of the youth and rock channel Slovak Radio started in the 1990s, and was renamed along with the other public radio channels in the first decade of this century. The institution around it has changed more than the station did: Slovak Radio and Slovak Television merged into RTVS in 2011, and STVR took its place in 2024.Stanica vyrástla z mládežníckeho a rockového okruhu, ktorý v 90. rokoch rozbehol Slovenský rozhlas, a spolu s ostatnými verejnoprávnymi okruhmi ju v prvej dekáde tohto storočia premenovali. Rádio_FM goes out on FM, on digital radio where that is available, and online, with an archive of past programmes.
