The climate is continental: cold winters, warm summers, and real spring and autumn in between. The Danubian Lowland in the south is the hottest and driest part of the country and regularly passes thirty degrees in July and August. The northern valleys and the Tatras are several degrees cooler and much wetter, and hold snow from roughly December to March at village level and far longer high up.Podnebie je kontinentálne: studené zimy, teplé letá a medzi tým skutočná jar a jeseň. Podunajská nížina na juhu je najteplejšou a najsuchšou časťou krajiny a v júli a auguste pravidelne prekračuje tridsať stupňov. Severné doliny a Tatry sú o niekoľko stupňov chladnejšie a oveľa vlhkejšie; sneh v dedinách vydrží zhruba od decembra do marca a vo vyšších polohách podstatne dlhšie.
Mountain weather changes fast and independently of the forecast for the valley. A summer afternoon thunderstorm on an exposed ridge is a routine event, not a freak one, and it is the reason Slovak hikers start early and are off the tops by mid-afternoon.Počasie v horách sa mení rýchlo a nezávisle od predpovede pre dolinu. Letná popoludňajšia búrka na otvorenom hrebeni je bežná, nie výnimočná udalosť — preto slovenskí turisti vyrážajú skoro ráno a z hrebeňov schádzajú do skorého popoludnia.

July and August are the domestic holiday season: the Tatras, the aquaparks and the lakes are at their fullest, and so are the roads to them on a Friday afternoon. Late December to early January and the February school holidays do the same for the ski resorts.Júl a august sú domácou dovolenkovou sezónou: Tatry, aquaparky a jazerá sú najplnšie — a v piatok popoludní aj cesty k nim. May, June and September are the best months for almost everything else. The waterfalls run hardest in late spring, the light in September is the best of the year, and the towns are pleasant rather than crowded. April and October are a gamble on the weather and a near-certainty of closed doors.Máj, jún a september sú najlepšie mesiace takmer na všetko ostatné. Vodopády majú najviac vody v neskorej jari, septembrové svetlo je najkrajšie v roku a mestá sú príjemné namiesto preplnených. Apríl a október sú lotéria s počasím a takmer istota zatvorených dverí.
What is actually openČo je naozaj otvorené
This is the part that decides trips. A great many Slovak castles, manor houses, museums and show caves close completely outside the warm half of the year, or open only at weekends, or only for pre-booked groups. That includes some of the best of them.Práve toto rozhoduje o cestách. Veľa slovenských hradov, kaštieľov, múzeí a sprístupnených jaskýň je mimo teplej polovice roka úplne zatvorených, prípadne otvárajú len cez víkendy alebo len pre vopred ohlásené skupiny. Platí to aj o tých najlepších z nich.
In the High Tatras the high-level marked trails are closed by regulation from 1 November to 15 June each year, for avalanche and wildlife reasons. Valley walks stay open. This is a legal closure, not a recommendation, and it applies however good the weather looks.Vo Vysokých Tatrách sú vysokohorské značené chodníky zo zákona uzavreté každoročne od 1. novembra do 15. júna, z lavínových a ochranárskych dôvodov. Dolinové trasy zostávajú otvorené. Ide o právnu uzáveru, nie o odporúčanie, a platí bez ohľadu na to, ako dobre počasie vyzerá.
The practical rule: confirm opening directly with the place itself before you build a day around it, and have a wet-weather alternative in every valley you plan to be in.Praktické pravidlo: otváracie hodiny si pred plánovaním dňa overte priamo na mieste a v každej doline, kde sa chystáte byť, majte alternatívu pre zlé počasie.
