The currency is the euro, adopted on 1 January 2009, which makes Slovakia one of the few countries in central Europe where a visitor from the euro area needs to think about money at all. Prices are quoted with tax included; the figure on the shelf is the figure at the till.Menou je euro, zavedené 1. januára 2009 — vďaka tomu je Slovensko jednou z mála krajín strednej Európy, kde návštevník z eurozóny nemusí o peniazoch vôbec premýšľať. Contactless card payment is normal everywhere from a city restaurant to a village supermarket, and phone payment is widely used. Cash still runs the margins: some village shops, farm gates, market stalls, small pensions, mountain huts, church collection boxes and the occasional castle ticket desk take nothing else.Bezkontaktné platby kartou sú bežné všade od mestskej reštaurácie po dedinskú predajňu a platenie telefónom je rozšírené. Cash machines are called bankomat and are in every town. If one offers to charge you in your home currency rather than in euros, decline — that is dynamic currency conversion and its rate is worse than your own bank's.Bankomaty sú v každom meste. Ak vám niektorý ponúkne účtovať sumu vo vašej domácej mene namiesto v eurách, odmietnite — je to dynamická konverzia meny a jej kurz je horší než kurz vašej banky.
Bureau-de-change offices exist in the cities but there is rarely a reason to use one. Travellers' cheques are not a thing here.Zmenárne v mestách existujú, ale málokedy je dôvod ich použiť. Cestovné šeky sa tu nepoužívajú.
Tipping and the restSprepitné a ostatné
Tipping is normal but modest: rounding up, or about ten per cent for table service you were happy with, handed to the server rather than left on the table. Say the total you want to pay when you hand over the card or the cash — leaving money and walking out is not the local pattern.Sprepitné je bežné, ale striedme: zaokrúhli sa nahor, prípadne asi desať percent pri obsluhe, s ktorou ste boli spokojní — a dáva sa čašníkovi, nenecháva sa na stole. Town parking is generally paid, by meter or by app, and enforcement is real. Motorway use needs an electronic vignette, bought online rather than as a sticker — see the transport section for that.Parkovanie v mestách je spravidla spoplatnené, automatom alebo aplikáciou, a kontroluje sa naozaj.
