None of this lives behind museum glass. The kroj comes out of the wardrobe every festival summer, the bryndza still rides down from the salaš, and the cellar doors of the Small Carpathians still swing open on cue each autumn. Slovak culture is not preserved — it simply continues, one table, one song, one glass at a time.
The mountains gave Slovakia its cheese, its flute and its dances; the lowlands gave it wine and wheat. The culture is the landscape, set to music.Hory dali Slovensku syr, fujaru i tance; nížiny mu dali víno a obilie. Kultúra je krajina prepísaná do hudby.
